John Thomas Steak House
1152 Danby Road
Ithaca, NY 14850
Telephone: 607-273-3464
Those of us who serve you at the John Thomas Steakhouse also want to be the best. That is the reason we “dry age” our extra-extra quality beef. Most places say that their beef is aged when it is one or two weeks old. We’ve found that super quality beef continues to improve for four, five, six weeks. Like great wines that improve over time, great beef gets sweeter, more tender, and acquires a taste that cannot be duplicated, except with proper age. Our kind of beef is extremely expensive. We pay more in the beginning, it loses twenty percent of its weight in the aging cooler, and then we have to trim it. And the meat, meanwhile, demands special care; each piece must be stored in specially refrigerated meat coolers that maintain specific humidity, temperature, and air circulation.

The Valentine Cafe
115 S Quarry St
Ithaca, NY 14850
Telephone: 607-277-9969
Reservations a must
Ambiance is key at the Valentine Cafe, which is arguably one of Ithaca’s hardest to find finds. Located in an apartment building at the end of South Quarry Street (115 S. Quarry) on the very fringes of Collegetown, the Valentine Cafe is a first-rate restaurant with a diverse menu and wine list. Open Tuesday through Sunday for dinner only (5:30 T-Sat, 5:00 Sun), reservations are required. Walking into the entrance of the apartment building, first time patrons of the Valentine Cafe are surprised at the elegance and atmosphere of the place. Indeed, the establishment’s isolation is part of its mystique. When eating at the Valentine, one feels as if he (or she) has discovered a well guarded secret — which, of course, he has. Complete with original works of art by the likes of Stan Taft (a Cornell professor and artist), the Valentine’s interior is lush but not overbearing. With a nice collection of jazz and classical playing on the stereo system, guests are privy to one of the finest meal experiences around. This makes the Valentine Cafe the ideal location for a romantic evening.

Upstate NY Bed and Breakfast in Ithaca

cayuga lake wine trail bed and breakfast Worlds Most Beautiful
Wine Region

by Budget Travel
New York’s Finger Lakes region, 9,000 square miles of rolling hills in the state’s panhandle, contains 117 wineries, a concentration second only to Napa Valley, Calif. But these days, while Napa is all high-gloss and limousines, the Finger Lakes have something rarer and, some would argue, more valuable: a community of unpretentious winemakers like Frank. Which might explain why Budget Travel readers picked it as the world’s most beautiful wine region — beating out heavyweights like France’s Loire Valley, Italy’s Piedmont, and, yes, Napa.
